David succeeded as king where Saul failed. David was “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22)—humble, trusting, obedient, repentant and thoroughly in love with the LORD. David got it. Israel’s earthly kings are but temporary stand-ins for the LORD, the King Almighty. Israel thrived under King David—victorious in battle, righteous in his judgments. In response to David’s faithful heart, God expanded The Promise by designating to David an eternal throne from which the future King of kings will come. Do we have a great nation yet? We’re almost there.
